Off the Hook: Young fishermen add spark at annual Umkomaas Ski-boat Interclub

A total of 21 teams participated in this event.

The annual Umkomaas Ski-boat Interclub was held from March 29-31.

A total of 21 teams participated in this event, and some of our more local South Coast teams included Park Rynie, Umkomaas and Pennington.

Fishermen were happy to see a lot of youngsters involved this year.

One of the men said that it’s good for the older generations to school the young ones so that they may pass on all that they know to future generations. The confidence of these young ones are really growing.

There was only one day spent out at sea which was tough, but there were some really good catches. These included yellowfin tuna, dorado, Englishman, yellow spotted kingfish, eastern little tuna, cuta, bonnie, amberjack, soldierfish and rock cod.

The Park Rynie seniors team managed to get one amber (that was just underweight) and a yellowfin tuna of 16kgs. They gladly finished off in sixth place.

The Park Rynie juniors found difficulty in getting a bite, as did six other teams, so they all tied in 15th place. This just shows how hard the fishing actually was that day.

The top spots were as follows:
In third place was the East Rand team, second went to Shelly Beach and first place went to the Durban Whites.

Kyle Hattingh, one of the youngest skippers on the South Coast, gave thanks to all who were involved in this event, from the participants to the sponsors of prizes to the guys who did all the running around and watching of boats at night.

A deejay was present on both Friday and Saturday night for entertainment and everyone enjoyed a few cold ones to set the mood.

Even though it was a challenging weekend, fishermen young and old all look forward to the next one!

With the general fishing, last week’s fishermen were grateful for their good weather during the week and also on the weekend with some windy conditions. With the low tide in the mornings, sandbanks were visible, thus making shore fishing not so grand in Park Rynie.
