Girls raped during sleep-over in Shelly Beach

An arrest has been made.

What should have been a fun birthday weekend in December last year turned into a nightmare for two teenage girls who were raped during a sleep-over.

A 47-year-old man from Shelly Beach was arrested and charged with raping the girls, aged 16 and 17 years.

Police spokesman, Sergeant Sibu Ncane said the Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences (FCS) unit in Port Shepstone is investigating.

The man appeared in the Port Shepstone Magistrate’s Court on Monday this week, and the case has been postponed for further investigation. He remains in police custody.

A source close to the girls has warned parents not to allow their children to sleep out, no matter how convincing the adult might be that their child is safe in their care.

If you have been raped, contact the Thuthuzela Care Centre at the Port Shepstone Regional Hospital on 039 6886021.

Remember, a rape victim’s body is a crime scene. Don’t wash, drink or eat anything. Don’t change clothes. Don’t urinate (if possible) and don’t clean your teeth or brush your hair.

Thuthuzela Care Centre offers a one-stop rape crisis clinic to assist victims and ensure they are not shunted around the criminal justice system.

The centre is a place where traumatised patients can be examined in private, evidence can be collected, legal documentation completed and prescribed treatment for sexually transmitted diseases and HIV prevention issued.

Blood and HIV testing and liaison with the FCS unit are offered, as well as referral to a social worker and psychologist.

It never closes and, once a rape victim arrives, professional and caring staff will take care of everything.

The victim decides whether they want to be examined or receive treatment, but it is important to report any rape to the police.
