Calling litter busters

Ramsgate Lions Club is calling on everyone to join the Big Beach Clean Up.

Our most precious asset is undoubtedly our beautiful coastline and we need to keep it in pristine condition.

The clean up starts in Finnis Road (opposite St Margaret’s Anglican Church) and ends at Ramsgate’s main beach.

Save the date – March 23 from 7.30am. Take note transport will be arranged from Ramsgate to the pickup start.

Litter busters are advised to take lots of water and a picnic basket for the after clean up `socialising’. For more information contact Lion Caryn at 083 4457116.

He’s got rhythm

There is a fabulous musical treat in store at Margate Retirement Village.

The Residents’ Activities Committee (RAC) is thrilled to have concert pianist Christopher Duigan entertain at the Azalea Hall on March 23.

The show, `Christopher plays Gershwin’, will offer a concise and fascinating overview of the piano music of composer George Gershwin (1898-1937) whose big hits included `Swanee’ which was made famous by Al Jolson, `Rhapsody in Blue’, `Summertime’, and `Shall We Dance’. The folk-opera `Porgy and Bess’ (1935) is hailed by many as his most ambitious work.

Take note the doors open at 6pm and concert (theatre-style seating) starts at 7pm. Tickets at R85 per person are on sale from the RAC or admin offices.

More treats

Movie buffs take note the next classic movie at the village is the `Student Prince’ starring Mario Lanza and Norma Giusti.

The date to diarise is Sunday, March 17 at the Ronnie Baker Hall. The film starts at 2.30pm and tea, coffee and biscuits will be served during the intermission.

The `drinking song’ – `Drink, Drink, Drink’ is probably the best-known number from this musical.

Sad farewell

Mo McColl who has been visiting Margate of a couple of weeks returned to her home in Hastings, England last week. During her stay, Mo teamed up with her `singing buddy’ Mari Webster to stage a concert in Scottburgh.

They are Holland and Malta bound.
