Margate Moves: Support the `Shavathon’

All proceeds go towards the association's care and support programmes and donated hair is used to make wigs for cancer patients.

GET your hair shaved or sprayed at the Hibiscus Mall in Margate this Saturday (2nd).

The Cancer Association of South Africa (Cansa) urges everyone to support `Shavathon’ its biggest national fundraiser of the year. The theme is `Colouring Hope’ and it costs R50 for adults and R25 for children under 12 years to be sprayed or shaved. All proceeds go towards the association’s care and support programmes and donated hair is used to make wigs for cancer patients.

The sprayers and shavers will be at the mall from 8am to 1pm. This worthwhile cause needs lots of support.

Arty bookworms

The Ramsgate Book and Art Festival’s organisers will be having a planning meeting at the ETC Centre (next to the BP filling station) in Marine Drive, this Thursday (28th) from 9.30am.

Everyone who is interested in the festival is invited to the meeting.

This year’s literary festival is planned for July 25 to 28 and is jointly organised by Ramsgate Tourism and the Ramsgate Conservancy but needs input from the local community to ensure its continued success.

Treat in store

The Residents Activities Committee (RAC) at Margate Retirement Village is delighted to present `Christopher Duigan plays Gershwin’. The show will be staged at the Azalea Hall on March 23.

The concert will offer a concise and fascinating overview of the piano music of composer George Gershwin (1898-1937). His big hits include `Swanee’ which was made famous by Al Jolson, `Rhapsody in Blue’, `Summertime’, and `Shall We Dance’. The folk-opera `Porgy and Bess’ (1935) is hailed by many as his most ambitious work. Sadly this musical genius died from a brain tumour at the tender age of 38 years.

Take note the doors open at 6pm and the concert starts at 7pm. Tickets at R85 per person will be on sale from the RAC or admin offices from March 4.

There’s a treat in store for movie buffs. The next classic movie at the village is the `Student Prince’ starring Mario Lanza and Norma Giusti.

The date to diarise is Sunday, March 17 at the Ronnie Baker Hall. The film starts at 2.30pm and tea, coffee and biscuits will be served during the intermission.

The `drinking song’ – `Drink, Drink, Drink’ is probably the best-known number from this musical.

Support is needed

A new community pop-up market will be held in Ramsgate – outside the Artists’ Gallery in Marine Drive – on the first Saturday of each month.

Diarise March 2 and go along to the market which offers pre-loved clothing, upcycled and recycled goods as well as a good range or artisanal and organic food.

If you would like to find out more about the market call Taryn at 076 0787189.

Sad farewell

Mo McColl who has been visiting Margate over a couple of weeks returned to her home in Hastings, England last week. During her stay, Mo teamed up with her `singing buddy’ Mari Webster to stage a concert in Scottburgh.

There was unfortunately not enough time for the dynamic duo to host a show locally.

It’s Shrove (Pancake) Tuesday on March 5 the day before the start of Lent on Ash Wednesday (6th). Time to clear out the pantry of all those treats by making pancakes so one is not tempted during the Lenten Fast.
