Rotary International celebrates its 114th anniversary

Rotary was originally formed for fellowship but quickly evolved to use the talents and resources of its members to be of service to the community.

ROTARY, also known as the world’s first service club, was founded on February 23, 1905.

Back then, lawyer Paul Harris,  and three of his friends met in a small office in downtown Chicago with the aim of rekindling the ‘spirit of friendliness’ they had known in their home towns.

Word of the club they had started soon spread and others were invited to join. The club was then named ‘Rotary’ to describe the practice of meeting in rotation at the member’s various places of business. Rotary was originally formed for fellowship but quickly evolved to use the talents and resources of its members to be of service to the community.

The Rotary Club of Scottburgh celebrated the 114th anniversary on Saturday morning at its coffee den. Every Saturday morning, Scottburgh Rotary hosts ‘The Rotary Coffee Den’ which is Scottburgh’s longest-running project. This is a place where members get to connect on an ongoing basis with the local residents of Scottburgh. So it was only fitting that they celebrated this milestone there.

All those who visited the coffee den on Saturday were treated to brownies and were greeted by Rotarians and members of Scottburgh High’s Interact Club who assisted on the day.

This year Rotary’s anniversary coincided with the annual visit to their club by their district governor Gianna Doubell, accompanied by district governor Ann Karin Shaw and assistant district governor Anne Thompson.

“It was a pleasure and an honour to host them where they got to see the workings of our coffee den as well as meet many of our loyal friends,” said Cherilynn Poynter of Scottburgh’s Rotary Club.
