Life sentence for man who disembowelled aunt

The court described the murder as 'a horrific, gruesome act, possibly aimed at harvesting body parts for muti purposes'.

Sukoluke Innocent Ngqulunga (22) of Mvozane Ward in Mehlomnyama was sentenced last Thursday to life imprisonment for murder and a further 10 years for housebreaking with intent to murder.

The sentences will run concurrently.

He was arrested in Dweshula for the murder of his aunt, Ntombilezi Mhlongo (57) on August 16, 2015.

During the court proceedings, it was heard how a neighbour had found Mhlongo’s remains. Her legs, breasts and one arm were missing and she had been disembowelled.

Ngqulunga was arrested as he tried to flee the scene.

Regional Magistrate Johann Bester said Ngqulunga was ‘an evasive and mendacious’ witness.

“The court described the murder of Mhlongo as a horrific, gruesome act, possibly aimed at harvesting body parts for muti purposes.

“Although Ngqulunga was only 19 years old at the time and had a history of alcohol and cannabis abuse, the murder of his own aunt in such a gruesome fashion evoked strong feelings of indignation on the part of her family members and society as a whole,” Magistrate Bester concluded.

The investigating officer, Detective Warrant Officer Zorro Cele worked tirelessly to ensure Ngqulunga received the maximum sentence.
