Hibberdene Happenings: Barry leaves a void

He was well known to both locals and holidaymakers alike due to his involvement with the Jolly Roger Fun Pub.

NEWS of the death of Barry Jones has plunged the community into a state of great sadness. Barry died last Sunday (13th) morning, after spending a great deal of the last few months either in hospital or recuperating from bouts of illness and went through a very difficult time.

He was well known to both locals and holidaymakers alike due to his involvement with the Jolly Roger Fun Pub and will be missed and lovingly remembered by many. Deepest sympathy goes to his wife Heather, daughter Sarah van Deventer (in Cape Town), stepdaughters Leanne Botha and Janine Hasford and Leanne’s daughter Heidi Richards, as well as a host of friends and relatives overseas.

Back on track

The first day of school has come and gone. Most locals who spent the festive season away from Hibberdene have returned home and most holidaymakers have left our shores for their homes, so basically life has returned to normal. Many clubs and organisations went into recess during the Christmas and New Year period, but things should start getting back to normal in the weeks to come.

Early bird breakfasts

Mizpah Church will start the ball rolling by holding the first men’s breakfast of the year this Saturday (19th) at the church premises at 7am. The cost is only R20 per person, so why not start the year off on a high by beginning with a great meal and good company? Hot on Mizpah’s heels will be the Methodist Church, which holds its breakfast at the church on Saturday, February 2, also at 7am. Men of all denominations are most welcome at either or both breakfasts.

Clinic queries

Your scribe has received several queries regarding the recommencement of the eye and dental clinics.

Traditionally these two clinics go into recess from mid-November to mid-February and the public will be informed timeously once they are ready to reconvene.

Please note that prices may increase in the new year, but this will only be known once the clinics actually commence.

Catching up

It was good to see Sue Myburgh in Hibberdene during the week. She has settled in well at the Umdoni Retirement Village, between Scottburgh and Pennington, to which she relocated last year. She sends fondest greetings to friends and acquaintances in Hibberdene.

Happy birthday

This week’s wishes go to Gina Havenga and Corrie van Aswegen (17th), Sue Myburgh (18th), Kleintjie Snyman and Chris Joubert (19th), Jenny Potgieter (20th) and Marie Brooks and Yvonne van Heerden (22nd).

News is very scarce at the moment, so any snippets phoned through would be much appreciated.
