Early on Tuesday morning this week, Sarel received a phone call from a Harding policeman asking for help to remove a snake from a classroom at Siyephu Primary.

A security guard on patrol had spotted a snake lurking in the rafters.

Sarel asked the policeman to send him a photograph of the snake, which Sarel then immediately identified as a mamba.

He advised the policeman to shut the classroom door in order to keep the snake inside.

Sarel’s neighbour Nick Smuts joined him for the long and hot, drive to Harding.

“We spent three hours in the car, but I don’t mind going the extra mile to assist and keep the community safe,” said Sarel.

The intrepid snake catcher said it was a ‘relatively easy’ catch.

“I stood on a school bench and with my long grab stick, I snatched the mamba from the rafters and brought it gently down to the classroom floor, and the grabbed it behind the head.”
