Mr Zuma was on a campaign to encourage people to register to vote in the 2019 general elections.

The campaign started off with a senior citizens’ breakfast at Margate Hotel, where Mr Zuma urged older ANC members to keep taking part in the party’s activities.

“You must always keep in mind that this is our democracy to keep, regardless of age.”

The breakfast was followed by a ‘blitz’ at the Margate taxi rank and a meet-and-greet walkabout at the Shelly Centre.

Other activities included a visit to Umthunzi Hotel and Conference, a ‘blitz’ in the Port Shepstone central business district and a community meeting in the Bhobhoyi area.

During his visit to Bhobhoyi, Mr Zuma told those who attended that he had resigned to save his party.

“The ANC NEC told me to resign as president. I decided to do so because the ANC is more important than my pain and feelings.”

He also acknowledged the ANC’s mistakes in its tenure as the governing party, saying, “Mistakes happen when you’re working.”

ANC Lower South Coast Region spokesman, Lindo Mzimela, said they were honoured to host Mr Zuma, who worked tirelessly as one of the volunteers as commanded by President Cyril Ramaphosa in his ‘Thuma Mina’ campaign.
