Rotarians generously donate walking aids to Harding Special School

Being a public school, they receive a state subsidy, but it is not enough.

Hibiscus Coast Rotarians and Anns had the privilege of visiting Harding Special School, another sustainable project that the club supports and assists wherever possible. They donate annually and this year the money went towards much-needed K-frames (walking aids).

The school caters mainly for the needs of KwaZulu-Natal children with physical and neurological disabilities. Most of the 165-plus pupils come from impoverished, rural homes and make use of the school’s hostel facilities.

Various vocational skills are taught, including agriculture. These skills aim to provide opportunities for pupils to experience different trades and equip them with good work habits and employable skills. The rehabilitation team includes both physical and occupational therapists with a focus on early intervention.

Being a public school, it receives a state subsidy, but it is not enough so the school is highly dependent on the kindness and generosity of the community and local businesses.

In order to minimise expenses, principal Jonathan Simpson and his team have made huge efforts to be more self-sufficient through various projects, including permaculture vegetable and fruit tree planting, as well as chicken rearing.

These projects also form part of the skills training programmes and allow pupils to be empowered with self-sustaining skills. The products of these projects assist in providing food for hostel boarders and lower fees considerably.
