Margate Moves: No fleas, just food and fun

There are several 'flea markets' coming up this month.

HAVE you ever wondered where the term flea market comes from? It comes from the French marche aux puces, apparently this was the name given to a market in Paris (around the 1860s) which specialised in selling shabby second-hand goods – some of which contained fleas.

These days it is more about being an open-air market with not a flea in sight.

And many flea markets have morphed into car boot markets.

There are a few such markets coming up this month. These community fairs are part of an uplift project.

The first takes place at Sebenza Village in Ramsgate this Saturday (8th) from 8am 1pm, goods on offer include previously owned goods, arts and crafts, leather and denim handbags and hand-made clothing. Best of all is the variety of fair food that will be on offer – jaffels, pancakes, boerewors rolls, mince vetkoek and sweet treats. Next up is at the Doxa Church at the crossroads intersection in Margate on September 15 also from 8am to 1pm, back to Sebenza on the 22nd and on Sunday (23rd) the venue is the Hibiscus Mall parking area from 8am until 2pm. For more information about the markets contact the organiser Lorraine at 0781755839.

Good music

Head to Rocky Ridge in Ramsgate this Saturday (8th) to catch Jacob’s Saw. The band received rave reviews when it played at the South Coast Bike Fest. Doors open at 6pm, there’s a great menu on offer so get some grub and settle down for a three-hour musical journey from 8pm.

Give and get

Margate Round Tablers will team up with the South African National Blood Service (Sanbs) at Hibiscus Mall in Margate this Saturday (8th) for a life-saving `Pint for a Pint’ campaign.

If you donate a pint of blood you will get a pint of beer or a cold drink.

Be at the shopping centre between 9am and to 2pm to be a lifesaver.

Roll it

Margate Bowling Club will hold a Pink Drive Charity Day and is hoping for lots of support. The cancer awareness bowling Tournament will be held on Sunday, September 30 from 9am to 1pm. There will be many prizes on offer as well as raffles, live music and lots of fab food to make it a fun day. Bowlers are asked to wear something pink even if it is only shoelaces.
