Margate Moves: Spoilt for choice

THERE is going to be lots to do over the next few weeks as everyone seems to have shaken off their winter cocoons as there are loads of events coming up.

And the most beautiful way to step into spring is by visiting the Hibiscus Mall in Margate this weekend. The shopping centre is holding `Flowers Through the Mall’ – well worth the stroll from one end to the other to admire the blooms and floral creations on show. Food and fashion

If you are looking for a good vibe then visit the inaugural Coast Market. It takes place in Uplands Road, Margate, this Saturday (1st) from 9am. There’s something for the whole family on offer from a children’s play zone, to fashion and crafts, to live music, gourmet food and a cocktail bar along with a carnival atmosphere. Rally around

The Ramsgate Lions Club is hosting a car rally version of the popular television show `The Amazing Race’. It takes place this Saturday (1st) from midday.

Cost is R100 per car and entrants are to meet at the community centre in Glenmarkie Road where they will be given their clues to reach the various `pit stops’ en route.

As it is the last Friday of the month, Ramsgate Lions will hold their social `Braai and Brains’ night.

Get to the community centre this Friday (31st) where braai fires will be provided. All you need is to take along something to cook – salads are on sale and there is a cash bar.

After everyone has eaten brain power rules at the quiz (R10 per entrant).

Turning tricks

Bridge players from across the country are wished well when they take part in the South Coast Open Pairs tournament. It will be held at the Margate Country Club this weekend (September 1 and 2).

Players will be hoping to `turn tricks’ and `come up trumps’.

Save the dates

The next offering at Azalea Hall hosted by the Residents’ Activities Committee at Margate Retirement Village looks like another winner. `A Tribute to the Carpenters’ produced by Evan Roberts, features talented singers Shylo Pereira and Samantha Landers.

It is a wonderful musical journey offering all those well-loved songs by the brother and sister duo Karen and Richard Carpenter such as `Close to You’, `On Top of the World’ and `Mr Postman’.

If you remember songs like `Some Enchanted Evening’ or `Bali Ha’i’ or `Happy Talk’ then you know they were hits from the wonderful musical `South Pacific’ (music composed by Richard Rodgers and lyrics by Oscar Hammerstein).

The film version starring Mitzi Gaynor and Rossano Brazzi, will be screened at the next Classic Movie Show at the Ronnie Baker Hall at the village at 2.30pm. Cost is R5 which includes tea and biscuits (at intermission).

Mellow music

There are some brilliant performers making their way to Rocky Ridge in Ramsgate. First up are rock band Braxton Hix and three-piece outfit Buckshot this Saturday (1st). Celebrate Woodstock’s 49th anniversary by dressing in your favourite flower power gear – prizes for the best dressed hippies. Doors open at 6pm and cost is R50 per person.

The talented folk singer/guitarist Rowan Stuart will entertain this Sunday (2nd). Cost is R60 per person and the doors open at midday – Rowan is on stage from 2pm.

Show and shine

Petrol heads rejoice. The Porsche Gymkhana and Top End racing events will be held at Dezzi’s Raceway on September 21 and 22. And on Sunday (23rd) those gleaming, dream machines will be on show at the Margate Fishing Pier where they will take part in the Porsche Club’s `Show and Shine’ where everyone is invited to go along and drool at the cool cars’ line-up.
