OPINION: ‘Make sure you insist on a receipt’

To my amazement the amount stated on the document was noticeably smaller than one I paid.

DEAR Editor,-

If you have ever paid your car licence at the Margate municipal licensing office, you presumably have noticed how people struggle to find the proper amount to be paid when approaching the counter.

The reason is that nowhere near the vicinity of the cashier will you find a price list and you pay the amount the cashier pronounces through a small window.

When my turn came, after queuing for one and a half hours, I happily paid the amount the cashier articulated. No receipt was issued. I took note of the amount paid, just in case.

Two weeks later I received confirmation of the car licence payment, which was mailed by AARTO Road Traffic Management.

To my amazement the amount stated on the document was noticeably smaller than one I paid.

Unfortunately I’m not able to prove the discrepancy because the licensing office did not issue a receipt.

How many other people have noticed this strange practice at the Margate office?

This is totally unacceptable and I strongly suggest that a price list is displayed in a visible place and receipts be issued at the counter.
