Margate Moves: Lodge holds opens day

Freemasonry is not a secret society and masons contribute generously to relieve the poor.

 

MANY people wonder what Freemasonry is all about. It is an organisation that has intrigued non-members for centuries.

Freemasons are believed to have formed a brotherhood more than 500 years ago when they travelled across Europe laying the stones of the great Gothic cathedrals.

Freemasonry is not a secret society and masons contribute generously to relieve the poor.

The Wexford Lodge in Margate (corner of Wartski and Jenkins Avenues will hold an open day this Saturday (March 10) from 10am to 3pm.

Masons do not solicit for membership however, the open day is aimed at giving the public a better insight into the work that is done by them within their communities.

Men and women are invited to visit the lodge – enjoy a boerie roll and find out more about Freemasonry.

Register to vote

The Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) encourages voters to visit their voting stations this weekend (March 10 and 11) between 8am and 5pm to ensure they are registered.

The country will hold its general election in 2019 and the voter registration weekend is especially aimed at getting young people to register.

If you are aged 17 you can register now for next year’s elections. Take note only those aged 18 years are eligible to cast their vote. You need to take your bar-coded ID book or card and you will be assisted by IEC officials to complete the registration form.

Voters can phone 0800118000 – Monday to Friday to check where their correct voting station is located. You can also sms your ID number to 32810.

Conservancy to meet

If you care about your environment you are cordially invited to attend the Ramsgate Conservancy’s annual general meeting.

It takes place at the Whale Deck Enviro Centre at Ramsgate beach next Thursday, March 15 at 5.30pm.

Great show

The eight-piece Durban swing band `The Jazz Minkeys’ are heading to the Azalea Hall. If you are a lover of great music performed by a fabulous group of musicians then don’t miss this show.

The theatre-style extravaganza takes place at the Margate Retirement Village on Saturday, March 24 at 6pm.

Learn to play

Ramsgate Lions Club is hosting a fun, family bowls day. It takes place at the Margate Bowling Club on Sunday, March 25 from 9.30am.

Learn to roll woods on the lawns in a non-formal environment. Contrary to popular belief playing bowls is not just for `old’ folks – the game can be enjoyed by young and old alike and does not require unrealistic fitness levels.

After the `match’ there will be a braai – take your own meat – salads on sale at R20 per person and there will be a cash bar.

Pull out all your green gear and head off to Southbroom Bowling Club next Saturday. It’s St Patrick’s Day (March 17) and the club is hosting a special St Paddy’s Day celebration.
