Dedicated teacher Daya Mahadev retires after 37 years

Ill health has forced him to step down.

Marburg Secondary’s Afrikaans language specialist, Daya Mahadev, has taken early retirement, due to ill health, following 37 years of dedicated service to the teaching profession.

Mr Mahadev commenced his teaching career at RA Engar School in 1981.

In mid-1982, he was head-hunted for his language expertise and recruited by the legendary late principal, Lionel Powys, at the newly-established Marburg Secondary School, where he served the rest of his teaching career till his retirement.

He took the teaching of the language of Afrikaans to new heights with the very high standards that he set for his pupils to achieve, many of whom have excelled at university in the very language that he taught them to love.

Current principal and former Afrikaans HOD, Saleem Vallee, said that Mr Mahadev was an outstanding educator, with the status of a master teacher.

“He has an exceptional command of the Afrikaans language, which contributed towards the school’s excellent results over the many years,” explained Mr Vallee.

“Mr Mahadev was not only an accomplished teacher in the classroom, he also involved himself in co- and extracurricular activities coordinating numerous awards days and matric farewell functions.”

The principal, staff, pupils and governing body wish Mr Mahadev all the very best in his retirement.
