A trip from the Eastern Cape to Port Shepstone almost turned deadly for a South Coast man last Friday.
The 21-year-old was shot at while travelling on the N2, some five kilometres from Harding.
“I had just dropped off a colleague at around 4.45pm, when a silver Polo sedan pulled up next to me. There appeared to be two people in the vehicle – the driver, and a passenger seated in the back,” he said.

“A shot was fired, which struck the door of my bakkie. When the second shot was fired, I ducked and the bullet passed through my closed window, struck the headrest and exited through the back window. The Polo then sped off, turning onto a gravel road and disappearing.”
The shaken driver did not want to continue to Port Shepstone, so he turned back and reported the shooting at the Harding police station.
Police spokesman, Captain Gerald Mfeka confirmed the incident, saying that the man seated in the back of the sedan had apparently fired the shots.
“Harding detectives are investigating a case of attempted hijacking. No arrests have yet been made.”
The driver of the bakkie was fortunate to suffer only minor cuts to his face and neck as a result of the shattered window.
“I was extremely lucky. If I hadn’t ducked to avoid those bullets, I would have been hit twice in the head. Unfortunately, with everything happening so fast, I couldn’t get the registration number of the vehicle.
“I have come forward with my story to warn other motorists travelling on the N2 near Harding to be cautious at all times. This took me by surprise, but I remained focused, which probably saved my life,” he said.
