Margate Moves: Meeting in Manchester – Bra Hugh and Verona

When he learned that the Baldis hailed from KwaZulu-Natal he was even happier and asked them all about the area.

IT was with immense sadness that Margate resident Verona Baldi from Positano Lodge heard about the death of legendary jazz musician, Hugh Masekela last Tuesday.

Verona had always admired his amazing trumpet playing ability and when she recognised him at Manchester Airport a few years ago she simply walked up to him and said “hello Hugh”.

The Baldi family – Verona, Luciano and daughter Bianca were on their way back from Scotland via Manchester Airport where there was a group of musicians standing with their instruments.

That’s when Verona spotted the great man. He was delighted to be recognised by a fellow South African and he immediately took out his mobile phone to take a photograph of himself with Verona.

When he learned that the Baldis hailed from KwaZulu-Natal he was even happier and asked them all about the area.

They boarded the London-bound flight together and on arrival he waved goodbye and wished them well before he went off to perform at a concert that night.

“It was a chance meeting in 2013 and I have always cherished my special pic – it has pride of place in my home. He was an international celebrity but he took time to talk to us and make us feel special. Hamba Kahle Bra Hugh,” said Verona.
