Drunken driving and public drinking tackled in Scottburgh

Road users, both drivers and pedestrians, need to act more responsibly if we are to curb the road death toll.

Expect more roadblocks aimed at curbing drinking and driving, police have warned.

On Monday this week, four men appeared in the Scottburgh Magistrate’s Court facing charges of driving under the influence. All four  cases were postponed to January 12.

The court emphasised the seriousness of driving under the influence and how innocent lives could be at risk with these drivers on the road.

“Despite initiatives by the Department of Transport and law enforcement agencies to stop the carnage on our roads, South Africa remains one of the worst countries in respect of alcohol related road deaths,” said Scottburgh SAPS communications officer, Captain Vincent Pandarum.

“Road users, both drivers and pedestrians, need to act more responsibly if we are to  curb the growing death tolls on the roads.”

It is generally accepted that drunken driving is one of the biggest threats to road safety in South Africa.

Even intoxicated pedestrians will be detained by the SAPS for their own safety until sober.

Apart from policing the beaches for alcohol related offences during the festive period and beyond, the Scottburgh SAPS will be manning roadblocks at various locations.

“It has come to our attention that there are some revellers who park their vehicles in the Scottburgh Mall parking area at night, play music at full volume and consume liquor in public. Be warned, that will come to an end soon,” said Captain Pandarum.

Police have warned that all offenders will be prosecuted and identities will be released to the media once they’ve made their first appearances in court.

“It is too late for regrets after you seriously maim or cause the death of some innocent person, perhaps a relative or a close friend.”
