Sarel’s snake diaries: When the sun pops out so do the snakes

Life is tough for Sarel van der Merwe when you have to drop the golf clubs for a game of 'catch the mamba'.

IT was a somewhat busy Tuesday last week for  snake catcher, Sarel van der Merwe of Shelly Beach.

He had to abandon his game of golf at San Lameer to respond to a call in Izingolweni, where he caught a  giant black mamba, over two metres in length.

Sarel said it was pitch dark, and it was thanks to  his head light that he was able to spot the snake in a room.

When I shone the light into the room, this must of irritated him. I saw it move it head and I was able to quickly grab it with my grab sticks. The community was very happy that I caught it.

His next call was to catch a  green mamba sunbathing in a garden at a holiday home in Munster. ‘It was a fully grown ‘big boy’ measuring 2.2 metres in length,” added Sarel.

Both the snakes have been safely released.released into the ‘wilderness’.
