Fireworks a nightmare for SPCA

The society's kennels were chock-a-block over the festive period.

THIS year’s New Year period was one of the worst in recent years for the Lower South Coast SPCA.

During the New Year period the animal welfare organisation had an exceptional number of calls from people who had lost their pets, as well as from people who had found stray animals.

“The fireworks started well before New Year and ended long after. This definitely needs better policing,” said LSC SPCA manager, Michael Muller.

He said kennels were so full that SPCA staff had to house lost pets in the kennel’s exercise area.

Mr Muller said the loud bangs were a lot worse than last year’s Diwali, or other celebrations.

More than 50 dogs were brought in. Fortunately, 80 percent of these have already been claimed.

Staff rescued another dog which had become entangled in a fence. This dog is still at the SPCA waiting to be claimed.

“We thank everyone for their assistance. We were able to reunite many of the dogs with their owners with very little fuss. We also thank the community for their patience and understanding,” said Mr Muller.
