Margate Moves: Litter busters out in full force

There was a recent letter in the Herald where it was reported that traffic officials threw a bottle out of their car window at the beach.

DESPITE the inclement weather a hardy bunch of volunteers turned up to help with the big beach clean-up in Margate last Saturday. Armed with bin bags and rubber gloves the litter busters descended on the beachfront from early morning and worked tirelessly with the team from Comfort Cool to pick up trash.

Margate Ratepayers’ Association joined forces with the Margate Business Association to spearhead the clean-up campaign. Co-ordinators Surina Smuts, Stephen Herbst, Corrie Wernick, Marthie Walker and Grant Maher were delighted by the number of people who helped rid the beach, lagoon and surrounding area of rubbish – bags and bags of plastic, bottles and containers were removed.

Perhaps the local authority should consider placing many more rubbish bins along the beachfront and the littering by-laws need to be effectively policed. There was a recent letter in the Herald where it was reported that traffic officials threw a bottle out of their car window at the beach.

Huge congratulations to all those who pitched up and pitched in to help with the clean-up.

Boot it

Spring is just around the corner and if you are doing a little spring cleaning why not sell those unwanted goods?

Lots on the go

Although it is a small pride the Ramsgate Lions Club is always on the go. Members have three great events lined up.

First up is the monthly Village Braai and Quiz night which takes place at the Community Centre in Glenmarkie Road this Friday (25th). Take along some meat for the braai – fires are lit at 6pm – salads are on offer at R30 per person and there is a cash bar. It is a great place to socialise, meet new friends and enjoy testing your brain power. The pub quiz comprising teams of four takes place after everyone has eaten. It is loads of fun and prizes can also be won. For more information phone Lion Janice Selkon at 083 7775131.

Next on the social calendar is the fun bowls day. It will be played or rolled at Margate Bowling Club next Sunday (3rd). The format is four players per team with a maximum of two regular bowlers. If you have ever wanted to learn how to roll the woods this is your chance with a bit of fun thrown in for good measure. To find out more contact Lion Janice.

Beautiful blooms

If you only do one thing next weekend make sure it is to visit the Southcoast Mall where the South Coast Floral Art Club will host `Flowers Through the Mall’ from September 1 to 3.

The shopping centre will be transformed into a floral fantasy to celebrate the arrival of spring.

Wine time

There will be more than 150 wines from 30 different estates at this year’s Spring Wine Festival. It takes place at Riverbend Conference Centre in Southbroom on September 22. Tickets at R125 per person are on sale from the Crocodile Farm’s shop. Wines will be offered for sale at discounted prices and the ticket price includes tasting and finger snacks.
