Herald Fishing: Fishermen hope for change in weather

Wind direction makes a big difference.

TRICKY conditions, with racing currents and very few gamefish around, have greeted fishermen taking part in the Shelly Beach Mercury Ski-boat Fishing Festival being held this week.

Despite this a couple of decent geelbek have been caught, plus an Englishman and some yellowfin tuna.

A number of sharks have been caught as anglers have brought their catches up to the boat.

With an expected change of wind direction and current, things should improve for anglers and hopefully some top catches will be had during the festival.

Be aware that the road going past the clubhouse is closed this week. And be sure to enjoy the festivities of this popular event.

Shad are still on the bite, mainly during early mornings and late afternoons.

Anglers have been catching a lot of grunter off Sandspit and The Block. These have been in the region of 3kg to 6kg, using sardine belly as bait.

Shaun Chetty caught this grunter at The Block in Port Shepstone recently.

Anglers fishing during the afternoon and on into the night have been rewarded with some decent size kob, mostly caught on rapala, paddle tails and chokka.

Reports indicate some decent sized bronze bream and black tails have been caught in the Shelly Beach area.

Orange Rocks and Pothole in Uvongo have had a lot of activity, with kingies and shad. Garrick are still around, anglers are getting them on plugs and live bait.
