Green light given for KwaNzimakwe RDP project
Community members have also threatened to take action if authorities do not step in.
DESPITE setbacks, the go-ahead has been given to the KwaNzimakwe RDP housing project.
This after the business forum in the area and sub-contractors downed tools and shut the entire project down for almost two weeks.
Following a meeting at the KwaNzimakwe Tribal Court between stakeholders, including the business forum, the Chief (Inkosi Nzimakwe), Ray Nkonyeni municipal officials and contractors on Tuesday this week, agreement for construction to carry on as planned were reached.

Grievances raised by the KwaNzimakwe business forum (KBF) included an increase in labour rates by the appointed contractor and the supplying of building material from businesses within the area, as well as inclusion in the project steering committee (PSC).
According to municipal officials, the decision to exclude business forums on PSCs was collectively made by council, therefore no exceptions would be made.
“Decisions made by council cannot be changed to suit people’s demands,” said officials.
The KBF has also been criticised by community members for disrupting PSC meetings and hindering service delivery.

“They are only interested in fattening their pockets and don’t care about us,” said a frustrated mother of three, who is on the waiting list for an RDP house.
Community members have also threatened to take action if authorities do not step in.
Inkosi Bhekizizwe Nzimakwe has confirmed that construction will carry on as agreed with the business forum.

Follow-up meetings will also be held between the municipal manager, municipal speaker, concerned stakeholders and the traditional council on Thursday, July 13 to iron out technical issues.
