UPDATE, June 23

POLICE are still searching for two men who fled the scene after abandoning their vehicle following a high speed chase on the N2 earlier this week.

Initially, four men stormed a Roseneath, Umkomaas shop robbing the owner at gunpoint.

The vehicle in which they fled the scene had – according to Lieutenant  Colonel Thulani Zwane – been stolen in 2015 from the Berea area.

Reports claim that one of the robbers who died at the scene has in fact now been identified as a police officer.

According to our sister publication, the South Coast SunNetcare 911 Media Liaison Officer Chris Botha said: “A man was found lying in the veld about 500m from the car with life threatening injuries.

It is further reported that the man then pleaded with paramedics to save his life as he was a policeman based in Mandeni.

Charges of armed robbery including an inquest were registered for investigation at the Umkomaas SAPS.

“The speedy response of our police officers which ensured that the stolen property as well as unlicensed firearms were recovered, is commended. The remaining suspect who managed to flee the scene will be apprehended soon. Our police officials will always defend themselves when they come under fire,” said the KwaZulu-Natal Acting Provincial Commissioner, Major General Bheki Langa.
