Sardine Run goes swimmingly

Umkomaas played its part in the popular event.

THE Sardine Run is now a thing of the past, having the final ‘hurrah’ on Saturday, June 17 and, as always, it was a great success with wonderful weather for the most part. It is debatable as to whether or not Thursday’s conditions were wonderful, with a howling gale blowing through most of the day.

The only players who benefitted, were the teams who went out first, earlier in the morning, so they missed most of it! The other two days were superb, so there were no excuses for bad golf, but there was a whole lot of fun going on!!

It can be said, categorically, that everyone had a fantastic tournament. But it wouldn’t have been the success it was, without the help of our members, friends of the club and most importantly, our sponsors: Toyota Malanda, who were there every day with their new vehicles and banners; East Coast Breweries, who kept all the players hydrated on the sixth hole on all three days and the many other sponsors who supported the club in their efforts to make the Sardine Run a special and fun experience for all.

A huge thank you to our starters – Chris Viljoen, Keith Smith and Wally Kent on the last day, Jimmy Spear for marshalling so diligently every day, John Ridl from Selborne for the loan of golf carts and to all the staff who got the score cards done, sold raffle tickets, readied the golf carts in the dark each morning – while still doing the other many duties they have.

We simply have the best staff, members and friends any Club could wish for; no job was too small or too big for any of them!

Congratulations to all the winners of the Sardine Run – and to the many players who travelled long distances to get to the to South Coast – see you all next year!

The official results of the Sardine Run will be in Scottburgh Golf Club’s report and possibly on the website at www.sardinegolf.co.za

Next Thursday, June 22, Umkomaas Golf Club welcomes the Natal Nomads to the club for their bi-annual tournament – we wish them all a great day’s golfing in perfect weather.

The usual Individual Stableford was played on Wednesday, June 14 but, since preparations were in full swing and many of the Wednesday school were playing in the Sardine Run, there were only a few members playing in the competition. Nevertheless, they all had a perfect day’s golf, even though there are no results for publication!

Next Saturday’s the competition (June 24) is the Fourball Betterball Stableford with social golf on Sunday, June 25. Also happening on Sunday, is the craft market with loads of ‘goodies’ for all. Do come on down, have a look what is on offer at the stalls – there might be something of interest, just for you!

All our side competitions will be back to normal this week – the Geriatrics on Tuesdays and Fridays, starting at 7am, meeting on the first tee box at reduced green fees for any golfers wishing to play with a group early. Graham is your contact at 083-3255705 or Keith at 083-3055740 – give either of these two guys a call, they would love to hear from you.

Six-pin on Friday will also be back in its usual slot – at 2.45pm for those players who want to de-stress over six holes.

And last but not least – our KidzGolf – on Saturday mornings, starting at 8am for an hour. Coach Devlyn and his assistant, Mike, will be at the club to welcome you all on the practice putting green – so come along and learn about this very interesting game called golf! Moms and Dads are also welcome to come down and watch what their off-spring are doing for an hour!
