Golfers are all set for annual Sardine Run

Last Wednesday's Betterball Medal was a walk in the park for Bob Hall and Dave Sirey.

WELCOME to all our visitors to the 23rd annual edition of the Sardine Run Golf Tournament. May your drives be straight and your putts true. Enjoying yourselves is the main consideration and enjoying your golf even more so.

Apart from taking home some of the superb prizes there are on offer, may you take home happy memories of the tournament and of new friendships formed and old ones rekindled.

Last Wednesday’s Betterball Medal was a walk in the park for Bob Hall and Dave Sirey. Their 59 was four strokes clear of second placed management team of Linda Els and Flinky Dreyer with 63.

Barry Kisten dug up the hidden holes and Graham Brown, Mike Eley and Geoff Thommasen recorded two-clubs on the par threes. Bob Hall went one better and got his two-club on the notorious third hole recording an eagle – maybe he didn’t want a tricky sidewinder for a birdie.

After winning last week’s Monthly Medal John Mills must have had his head still in the clouds as he and partner Tony Kennedy unceremoniously lifted Stone Last – at least they picked up something!

The women enjoyed a rather leisurely breakfast get-together on Saturday and followed it up by playing a Threeball Alliance sponsored by Maggie Eley. Linda Hall, Lauren Davey and Nicky Holloway ran out winners with 82 followed in by Tanith Jenkins, Hayley Gilliver and Linda Els.

The birthday boys of January through April sponsored the alliance, always a welcome break after medal competitions.

Brian Richards, Hans Beuthe and the Brown boys, Graham and Denis, thought so after posting the winning score of 90 points.

There was a four-way count-out for second and third places all scoring 87 points. The captain’s team, which included Colin Moodie, Mick Marriot and Geoff Thommasen, got the best second nine score to take second and Bob Hall, Dave Sirey, Alan Eriksen and Brett Rowe managed to scrape in for third place.

Russel Freeman ‘freed’ the hidden holes and Alan Eriksen, once again, claimed his two-club. Jacques Els, back home after his stint in Arab land, led his team of Keith Love and the Joneses, Gary and Rupert, proudly to the captain’s table to lift Stone Last. For the last three a case of ‘déjà vu’ as they also picked it up last week.

At the moment our thoughts are with the family of Frik de Jager after he passed away last week. Frik was instrumental in setting up the juniors on Friday afternoons a few years back.

President Henry Gradwell is also in the wars; he is going into hospital next week to have a procedure to open up a blocked artery in his leg – keep smiling Heno, we’re pulling for you.

There is a warm-up Betterball Stableford on Wednesday – a sweetener for those wanting to try out the conditions for the ‘Run’ (and those with nothing else to do). And, of course, the ‘Run’ starts on Thursday. Play well, enjoy yourselves and drive home safely. We want to see you back in sunny Scotties next year.
