Murderer hands himself over to Umzinto SAPS

The case was remanded to June 9 for bail application.

GUILT often clouds one’s judgement. However, that seemingly was not the case for a 25-year-old man who handed himself over to the SAPS at the Umzinto Police Station after he stabbed a man in the face, chest and shoulder on Sunday morning, May 28.

It is alleged that the murderer and 27-year-old Mthokozisi Mkhize had been drinking and, at about 4.25am that morning, a fight had broken out between the two in Shayamoya, Amandawe.

Mkhize was urgently transported to GJ Crookes Hospital in Scottburgh but, despite efforts by medical personnel, succumbed to his injuries and died.

Mkhize’s body was removed to the Park Rynie State Mortuary where a postmortem investigation will be conducted to establish the exact cause of death.

The man allegedly responsible for Mkhize’s death has since appeared in the Scottburgh Magistrate’s Court on a charge of murder.

The case was remanded to June 9 for bail application.

“Police recovered an Okapi knife believed to be the murder weapon,” said Scottburgh SAPS communications officer, Captain Vincent Pandarum.

Preliminary investigations led Detective Constable Dillon Khamisa of the Scottburgh SAPS Detective Service to Umzinto Heights, where he recovered a jacket and beanie hidden in the bushes.

These will be subjected to forensic investigation as it is believed that the articles of clothing had been worn by the suspect during the crime.
