KwaZulu Agricultural Union seeks Young Farmer of the Year entrants

Kwanalu has embarked on its annual search for an exceptional young farmer.

A BRAND new Toyota Hilux single cab with a dashboard big enough to display the national Young Farmer of the Year trophy is one of the prizes that an exceptional young farmer is set to win.

And that farmer could well hail from our province. The KwaZulu Agricultural Union (Kwanalu) announced last week that it has embarked on its annual search for Kwanalu Young Farmer of the Year.

The provincial winner will then go on to represent KwaZulu-Natal in the 2017 Toyota SA / Agri-SA National Young Farmer of the Year competition and will stand a chance of winning the Hilux, the overall national prize.

This year’s competition has seen the age limit increase from 35 to 40, giving more outstanding farmers a chance at the title. The most recent national winner from KwaZulu-Natal was Anthony Goble from Tongaat who took home the coveted national trophy in 2015.

Kwanalu chief executive Sandy La Marque encouraged as many young farmers as possible from this province to enter the provincial competition, which is sponsored by Toyota SA.

“This competition highlights the great skills and entrepreneurial spirit required to be a successful farmer. We know we are blessed with a very high calibre of farmer in our province but this competition is more than just how much a farmer is able to produce or how pretty their farm looks.

It’s about sound business acumen and strong agricultural practices among a whole range of other criteria,” she said.

Male and female farmers under the age of 40, whether they are owners or partners in a farm, who are full members of Kwanalu are eligible to enter.

When the provincial judging and evaluation of the farmers and their agricultural practices takes place, the applicants will be evaluated on all aspects of their business including their overall vision for the future of their farming business.

Entries for the KZN Kwanalu Young Farmer of the Year competition close on July 28. For more information and to enter now, visit www.kwanalu.co.za or telephone 033 342 9393.
