Herald Fishing: WATCH: Pietie Bodenstein (8) lands the catch of his life … a huge couta

There's never a dull moment in South Coast waters.

PIETIE Bodenstein, aged only eight, provided one of the highlights of the week with his spectacular 33.2kg couta catch off Shelly Beach on ‘Bliksem’.

Another youngster, Travis Claridge, bagged a whopper of a barbel in a dam in Umzumbe. It weighed in at nearly 15kg.

Brilliant: Pietie Bodenstein (8) shows off his 33.2kg couta caught off Shelly Beach recently. That’s quite a catch, considering how these fish can fight.

Rock and Surf

The water has been very cold over the last couple of days with five days of north-easterly winds blowing. Despite this there are still signs of hound sharks around, plus a few hammers and blackfins off the deeper points.

Water has had good colour and a raggie pup was caught in the Leisure Bay area. Not much shad or bream around but a few snoek and kob have been caught.

Water has been rough all week and those who braved the cold and wind got a few fish. Some anglers travelled to the Transkei and got some lovely raggies, greys and blackfin sharks.

Deep Sea

The past weekend saw persistent north-easterly winds blow, but there was some good couta fishing off Port Edward. Some very big fish were caught, between 20-34kg, on several boats.

As mentioned earlier, there were the good catches by junior anglers. Pietie Bodenstein caught his 33.2kg couta and Reydon Basson caught a 23.5kg couta off Red Sands.

Lion fish.

General

Some interesting things have been happening way down south due mainly to the water temperature, it is surmised.

It has been reported that many fish, both big and small, have washed ashore in the East London area.

Coming up

TO Strand in Leisure Bay will host the Kayak, Rock & Surf Fishing Competition from July 16 to 18. Prizes to the value of R20 000 are waiting to be won.

Wow: Travis Claridge shows off the 14,5kg barbel he caught in a private dam in Umzumbe last Sunday.

It will also include archery, zipline, a music festival, raft building, rock climbing and paintball. There will be accommodation specials as well.

Tight lines!
