Fly fisherman Liam heads for overseas waters

The chance to do what you love most in another country doesn't come around too often.

LIAM van der Merwe (15) of Umtentweni is a young fly fisherman doing some special things.

While he also enjoys bodyboarding and spearfishing, it’s flyfishing that is his passion.

The teenager is a member of SASACC (South African Sport Angling and Casting Confederation) youth fly fishing team that will be travelling to the Czech Republic in May to compete in a four nations tournament.

The team, which comprises seven boys altogether and a manager, leaves on May 13 and returns on May 23.

There are four boys from KwaZulu-Natal (including Liam), plus one from Boland and another from Gauteng.

For Liam it’s his first time overseas and he’s looking forward to flying the South Coast flag, as well as wearing his national colours.

They will be competing against Slovenia, Poland and the Czech Republic.

Liam, who is in grade 10 at Port Shepstone High School, only started competitive angling last year and won the trophy for best angler, in his first year.

He is the son of Pieter and Alison, who encouraged juniors to join in at the fly anglers regular outings. “It’s a lot of fun for the juniors,” he said.

For more info on the next outing contact Pieter at 083 5437005.

The next meeting for the flyfishing club is at the Shelly Beach Ski-boat Club this Thursday (20th) at 6pm.
