Liam and Dean bag major share of fly fishing awards

The club may not be big, but the members certainly enjoy their hobby and are always keen to share their knowledge.

SOUTH Coast Fly Anglers held their 22nd annual prize-giving recently.

The Chris van Wyk chairman’s award went to Dean Angove, who also picked up the saltwater fly tyer of the year award.

The most improved angler was Liam van der Merwe. He was also the most prolific angler, with 380 fish caught, the majority of which were released.

Liam also caught the most species of fish, eight in all.

Most meritorious fish was caught by John New, a 4.2kg rainbow trout.

Second most meritorious fish went to Stan Park, a 3kg rainbow trout.

Fresh-water fly tyer of the year award went to Arthur Cary.

Merit certificates were awarded to Bianca Luther, Dean Angove and Duane Howell.

Liam, meanwhile, who is only 15, has been selected as a competitor for the South African Sports Angling and Casting Confederation 2017 youth team, (SASACC).

Liam will be representing South Africa at a four nations junior fly fishing championship being held in the Czech Republic in May this year.

At the AGM the following office bearers were elected: chairman – John New, treasurer – Stephen Brand, secretary and records clerk – Sean Tharratt, liaison – Pieter van der Merwe, scribe – Arthur Cary, member – Dean Angove.

Monthly meetings are held at the Shelly Beach Ski-boat Club on the last Thursday of the month at 6pm.
