Tertiary students who receive mayoral bursaries urged to ‘study diligently’

Some 37 tertiary students received a total of R380 000 towards their registration and tuition fees.

THIS year’s recipients of tertiary education funding from the Ugu District mayoral bursary fund were urged to refrain from taking part in protests and to rather channel their energies into studying.

Ugu District municipality speaker, Councillor Ntombifikile Gumede was speaking to students at an awards ceremony held at Zizi’s Restaurant, Umdlalo Lodge on Monday this week.

Some 37 tertiary students received a total of R380 000 towards their registration and tuition fees.

The bursaries were presented to students by deputy mayor, Cllr Mondli Chiliza, speaker Cllr Ntombifikile Gumede and Exco member Cllr Busisiwe Machi.

Cllr Gumede told students that humility and diligence were the key factors to ensuring success.

Youth manager, Mondli Ncane said 266 students had applied and the students whose applications were approved would each receive R10 000 while one student would receive a full bursary.

Department of Education specialist, Eric Masinga applauded Ugu for the initiative.

“To access the national funding scheme, a student must be registered at a higher learning institution. Ugu has just provided a stepping stone to assist students in acquiring a lifetime of knowledge,” he said.
