DONALD Trump might be onto something with this Mexican wall idea.
Maybe KwaZulu-Natal should think of building something similar to divide our province from Gauteng and Limpopo in particular. Not because we want to keep the Vaalies out (after all, they are our bread and butter), but as a barrier to an imminent invasion of… army worms.
Apparently these creepy little critters are causing huge angst among upcountry maize farmers and the last thing we need is them to wriggle into our bananas.
If not a wall, then anyone coming on holiday from those areas need to be dewormed at toll gates before being allowed in.
The idea might be wacky, but none more so than the new American president’s efforts to keep out Mexicans and Muslims.
Anyone who watched Carte Blanche last Sunday would have seen that a former prime minister of Norway was even detained because there was an Iranian stamp in his diplomatic passport. Unbelievable!
The Americans voted Trump into power so they are stuck with him, but what really hurts is that there seems to be a lot of local support for someone who can only be described as a chauvinist, bigot, racist and possibly a madman with the code to kick-start a nuclear apocalypse.
OK, maybe we should all be concerned about the latter item.
However, there are still South Coast people who openly show support for Trump in open conversation and on social media.
“Give him a chance, he might just surprise everyone,” some say, even women.
One fails to see how Trump can trump all the bad things he has and is already doing, so giving him a ‘chance’ might be a really bad, bad gamble.
* Any woman, or man with a loving wife and daughters must surely be horrified at his crass comments recorded on a bus about ‘pussy’ which inspired an international anti-Trump movement.
* Anyone who is Muslim or who has a Muslim colleague or friends must surely be horrified at Trump closing America’s borders to seven predominantly Muslim countries.
* Anyone who likes Mexican food and tequila must be horrified that they won’t get anything authentic when they next visit America. Caramba! You ‘have not’ lived until you’ve tried a proper burrito, nachos or taco.
There are lots of good things about America and Americans, to be sure. (If only we could follow their patriotic fervour and proudly fly the country’s flag outside our homes like they do.)
But Trump is the epitome of bad.
