Upgraded greens ready for play at Port Shepstone CC
The new greens were welcomed with much fanfare.
PORT Shepstone Country Club bowlers were delighted to be part of the opening of the refurbished B-green last Friday. As bottles of bubbly popped, guests were enlightened on the ‘birth’ of the new green. Committee member Dave Price said the greens were in a terrible state and looked pretty shoddy, especially the B-green!
“It probably qualified as a military testing station, the soil was stressed and one of our previous club members even treated it with brown sugar, so it also had a touch of diabetes!” joked Mr Price.
He pointed out that there was a desperate need for its upgrade because, with a green in that poor a state, the club tended to lose a lot of its members. “The overall cost of refurbishment was estimated at around R120 000 and, while our financial status was of concern, our greens continued to take punishment and strain.”
Mr Price said that fortunately the main club donated R60 000 toward the upgrade and the balance of R60 000 was raised from members’ generous sponsorships and very successful fund-raising bowls and business days.
“Although we managed to raise the money, the problem was that the refurbishment took longer than we expected as we had to rip the existing green and build new banks.” He explained that they had had to bring in new grass and the problems had been horrendous!
“There was a lack of coverage and weeds began to spring up. That’s when the camaraderie of this bowling club kicked in. Our legend Eddie Fann and his fellow bowlers got stuck into the green and overcame all obstacles.”
Mr Price reminded guests that the level of bowls at the Port Shepstone Bowling Club was of a very high standard, with the main ambition of making it the club of choice!
