Murdered councillor drives by-election

Plans to hold a by-election are in the pipeline.

THE Independent Electoral Commission is currently preparing to start the by-election process in Harding, following the untimely death of the ANC Ward 3 councillor at Umuziwabantu municipality.

Municipal manager, Sazi Mbhele has again declared a vacancy by sending a letter to the IEC two weeks ago to begin the process.

This is the second vacancy declared at Umuziwabantu since the August 3 elections, following the death of two ANC councillors.

IEC spokesman, Siphiwe Yeni, said they were currently preparing to start registering voters and will thereafter announce a date for the actual by-election.

He also said that it was important for voters to ensure that information provided to the IEC was correct. They were, he said, anticipating a smooth process.

The by-election process comes after Alwyn ‘Ace’ Houston was shot dead in full view of community members after addressing a public meeting.

No arrests have been made yet and the Hawks are still investigating the matter.

Harding community members have also voiced their concerns over the commission of inquiry processes meant to probe political killings.

At a meeting held in Harding recently, community members said details of when the inquiry would start were unclear.

However, spokesman for the KwaZulu-Natal premier, Ndabezinhle Sibiya, urged communities to remain patient.

He said the dates of the inquiry would be announced once all logistics had been finalised.
