Home Affairs fraudster arrested

He apparently sold a false birth certificate to a foreign national.

A HOME Affairs official has been arrested for the allegedly selling a fraudulent birth certificate and will appear in the Scottburgh Magistrate’s Court today.

“The 30-year-old official attended to a foreign national at the Park Rynie Home Affairs offices during January 2014. He apparently provided the national with a fraudulent birth certificate in exchange for a payment of R1 500,” said Scottburgh SAPS communications officer, Captain Vincent Pandarum.

Shockingly, the birth certificate was supposed to be collected by a legitimate South African citizen who had previously applied for late registration of birth.

When the foreign national inquired about obtaining a South African identity book, the official informed him that he could get one for between R3 500 and R4 000.

He did not follow up on this enquiry, said Captain Pandarum.

The foreign national subsequently visited the Home Affairs offices in Isipingo where he applied for a South African identity book.

“His application was processed and he was asked to call again to collect his ID book. However, Home Affairs investigators discovered that the fingerprints of the applicant for the birth certificate differed from those of the applicant for the ID book,” said Captain Pandarum.

The foreigner  identified the Home Affairs Park Rynie official who had sold him the fraudulent birth certificate.

Detective Warrant Officer Strini Maistry of the Scottburgh SAPS Detective Service is investigating the case.
