Theft of vehicles on the increase

Police are warning you to take steps to protect your car.

THERE has been a spate of cars being stolen of late, and it appears criminals are searching for soft targets.

A man living in Rethman Drive, Umtentweni was fortunate enough to have his car returned after it was stolen from outside his property last Tuesday.

Lazer 911 Security officer patrolling the area spotted the car which had been abandoned on the side of the road, not far from the spot where it was taken. No arrests have been made.

Police are calling on car owners to implement security measures to safeguard their vehicles.

“If you do not have a lock-up garage, it is advisable to park your vehicle in such a way that car thieves will have difficulty in stealing it and cannot do so without making a noise,” said police spokesman,  Lieutenant-Colonel Zandra Wiid.

According to the crime statistics released in September, there were 147 vehicles stolen from Hibberdene to Port Edward and inland to Harding between April 2015 and March 2016.

Topping the list was Hibberdene with 38 vehicles stolen, followed closely by Port Shepstone with 36 and Margate 27.
