Cops get their ‘runner’

The wounded man turned out to be hiding in Scottburgh.

SUCCESSFULLY evading capture by the SAPS last week, a gang member involved in multiple shootouts with the SAPS in Greenwood Park and Tafelkop was traced to Scottburgh on Tuesday this week.

The suspect was hiding out in Scottburgh, where he was also reportedly seeking treatment at GJ Crookes Hospital for a gunshot wound.

Acting on intelligence received from the Port Shepstone SAPS War Room, members of the Scottburgh Cluster Detective Task Team, Scottburgh Crime Intelligence and the Umzinto K9 Unit began their search in the Dududu area, finally ending up at GJ Crookes Hospital.

“They interviewed a patient with a gunshot wound to his chest and established that he was the suspect police had been pursuing. He was wanted for the theft of a vehicle and for shooting at police. He had been admitted to hospital under a false name,” said Scottburgh SAPS communication officer Captain Vincent Pandarum.

He added that the suspect had shot and wounded a police officer in the leg and abdomen.

The 28-year-old man was placed under arrest and handed over to the Chatsworth SAPS detectives.

The man and his fellow gang members  are wanted in connection with the hijacking of a vehicle in Chatsworth.

Police tracked the suspect to his residence in Tafelkop where a shootout ensued. He fled the scene in the hijacked vehicle.

The next day, the gang was involved in a second shootout with police.

They managed to flee on foot, leaving the vehicle behind.

A case of attempted murder was registered with the KwaNdengezi SAPS,and a case of carjacking was registered with the Chatsworth SAPS.

Further charges of attempted murder and malicious damage to property were registered with the Greenwood Park SAPS.
