Great support for classic car show

Most of the KZN car clubs were represented at the Scottburgh Classic Car Show.

A FEW early morning showers might have kept some car enthusiasts at home, but there was still an excellent turnout of exhibitors and visitors to the seventh annual Scottburgh Classic Car Show, at Scottburgh High School last Sunday.

And the rain certainly didn’t put a damper on the great atmosphere that has become a hallmark of this popular annual motoring bonanza. Classic cars of all marques and descriptions – fast, sleek and sporty, dignified, ponderous, luxurious, coupe or family-sized and many of those magnificent fin and chrome bedecked petrol gobblers from yesteryear – lined up to be admired.

Many of the exhibitors had travelled great distances to be there and almost all of KwaZulu-Natal’s classic car clubs as well as some well-known individual collectors were well represented. Visitors remarked on how well laid out the field was this year, making it easy to see all the exhibitions.

There was also a lovely display of amazing old motorcycles, most of them belonging to members of the Classic Motorcycle Club. For car lovers of a certain age, the highly polished and beautifully maintained old classics evoked so many memories. The background music from the ‘golden age of motoring’ added to the nostalgia.

With Mercedes-Benz the chosen marque this year, these elegant models led the way, kicking off the programme of motoring parades that always adds sparkle to the car shows. This parade was followed by a new event, the much-applauded Fun and Fashion Parade, presented by the Six Plus One cabaret artists and Stiletto Models, the classic motorcycles had their turn to shine then a parade of pre-selected vehicles presented the popular History of My Car event. The afternoon entertainment continued with the clubs and individual exhibitors taking turns to parade their cars.

Adding to visitors’ enjoyment were the wide variety of food stalls, a beer tent and a fine tea garden, strategically placed to command a fine view of the show arena.

This year, two worthy charities will share the proceeds from the car show. Action for the Blind and Disabled, a Pennington-based non-profit organisation, provides two years of computer skills training to disabled young people. Angels Care KZN in Elysium provides a home and food for the homeless and destitute.

Peter Fielding, the event organiser and founder of the host club, the Scottburgh Classic Car Club, thanked exhibitors and visitors for their continued support. This enabled the organisers to continue to generate much-needed funds for local charities, he said.
