11 die in Harding crash

A three-month old baby and a toddler are thought to be among the dead.

ELEVEN people died in an accident outside Harding yesterday (Sunday), when a bakkie overturned near Kwa Mbotho.

According to a report on East Coast Radio, a three-month-old baby and a  toddler were among those killed in yesterday’s afternoon crash.

Spokesman for KwaZulu-Natal Department of Transport , Kwanele Ncalane, said the MEC for Transport, Mxolisi Kaunda is currently on his way to the accident scene.

We are unable to give the exact details of the road worthiness of the vehicle and all other factors for now as we are on our way to the area. However an investigation has started, – Kwanele Ncalane

KZN MEC for Health, Dr Sibongiseni Dhlomo has sent condolences to the families of those involved.

According to the department, seven other people were also seriously injured.

Dr Dhlomo called on the Ugu District Health management to offer psychological counselling to all those involved.

The incident was horrifying to our Emergency Medical Services who attended to the injured and rushed them to hospital. It was even more traumatic for the Forensic Pathology Service personnel who had to retrieve so many bodies, – Dr Sibongiseni Dhlomo

A statement is awaited from Port Shepstone SAPS.
