Mkholombe residents burn tyres in protest

Police are monitoring the situation and no injuries have been reported at this stage.

RESIDENTS of the Mkholombe informal settlement began a service delivery protest at around 4am today.

They are burning tyres and stoning vehicles.

“One stone caused damage to the radiator of the police truck,” said police spokesman, Lieutenant-Colonel Zandra Wiid.

The windows of the security booth at the Ugu market have been smashed, the water tanker has been damaged and the gates of the municipal premises have been broken.

She said that members from POP and VISPOL were on the scene and the crowd is being dispersed using rubber bullets.

The main Harding road has not been affected and is open to traffic.
