‘No regrets’ for surfski paddler Barry Lewin

The paddlers did a lot better than they expected, despite a slow start.

BARRY Lewin (Jeep Team) and his racing partner Lee Furby were one of six pairs who broke the Scottburgh to Brighton Surfski Race’s 1998 record on Youth Day (June 16) this year.

It was a highly competitive event, and one in which Lewin and Furby weren’t initially going to enter, due mainly to its length (46.5km) and difficulty.

Still, at the last minute they decided to go for it, and had no regrets at the end, finishing in third place.

They broke the record by 16 minutes in what ended up being an exhilarating finish.

It was so close between Matt Bouman and Wade Kruger and Luke Nesbit and Gene Prato that race officials called it a tie.

Lewin and Furby could have knocked a few more minutes off their time, but Lewin had spent time in the gym (not expecting that he would race) in the days prior and took a little while to shake the post-gym soreness which slowed them down at first.

Still, no regrets and they’re looking forward to what lies ahead.
