Who will crack the nod after elections?

Competition is fierce for top spots.

EXPERIENCE in public service delivery versus political experience has left members of the ANC in the Lower South Coast Region at loggerheads as to who should take top spots after the August 3 elections.

Rumours and speculation about succession battles are rife. Even though the official stance is that there are no divisions within the regional executive committee (REC), there are various contenders for the HCM (Ray Nkonyeni) and Ugu mayoral positions.

According to a source within the REC, numerous meetings have been held to determine who will get the nod.

“On Tuesday, a final list was drawn up for all municipalities, pitting Tolomane Myayiza (ANC chairman) and current mayor Ntombifikile Gumede against each other for the Ugu Municipal top spot,”said the source.

“Gumede is more experienced in service delivery, having obtained a clean audit for the district, while Mr Myayiza has been chairman of the party for three consecutive terms.

The party is also alleged to have the same problem with the newly amalgamated Ray Nkonyeni Municipality with three names on top of the list.

Currently, Mayor Cynthia Mqwebu leads, followed by Exco member Doctor Njoko and former Ezinqoleni PR Councillor Sphumlile Mthiyane, who is ANC deputy secretary.

“They have all served in local government which makes it even more difficult to choose.”

Spokesman for the LSC region Sipho Dlamalala said they were at a stage of finalising all lists and would not be able to comment at this stage.
