ORIGINAL STORY

A FORMER policeman from Port Shepstone and his wife were arrested by the Hawks last week for a spate of business burglaries on the South Coast.

Hawks officers arrested the man (44)  formerly stationed at Port Shepstone, after following up on information which led them to his house.

Stolen items including iPads, hard drives, two smart phones, two laptops, one PVR recorder, one tablet, tools, one television and two small coded safes were found.

“Balaclavas and gloves suspected to be used during the commission of crime were also found,” said Hawks spokesman, Lieutenant Simphiwe Mhlongo.

The man was charged with business burglary and his wife (32) was charged with the possession of property suspected to be stolen.

They both appeared in the Port Shepstone Magistrates’ Court last Thursday and were granted R5 000 bail.

The case was postponed to June 15.

On Sunday, information was received that the other suspects were travelling from East London to KwaZulu-Natal.

Hawks officers went to Kokstad where a joint operation was conducted with the Road Traffic Inspectorate (RTI) and K9 Unit.

“The vehicle was intercepted at Brooksnek near Kokstad. The vehicle was searched and power tools and grinders were recovered,” said Lt Mhlongo.

Four suspects aged between 30 and 40 were arrested. They were charged with business robbery and will appear in the Port Shepstone Magistrate’s Court today, May 17.
