Informal traders receive a boost

They received sewing machines from the Hibiscus Coast Municipality.

MORE than 25 informal traders in Port Shepstone received industrial sewing machines, overlockers and other sewing accessories to help them pursue their sewing careers.

Hibiscus mayor Cynthia Mqwebu officially handed over these items at a ceremony held at Hibiscus Council Chambers recently.

Manager for economic development, Philani Khambule, said the project was meant to assist informal traders with broader opportunities and skills development. “Training alone can only assist a person to a certain extent, but getting equipment allows you to develop your skills while making a living from it.”

Ms Mqwebu urged all beneficiaries to start their own businesses and create job opportunities for others. She encouraged them to form a forum in order to position themselves better into the marketing and tourism industry.

Informal trader, Dumazile Mseleku from Oshabeni who received an industrial sewing machine, was grateful to God for hearing her prayers. “I can now do my business properly. I thank God and everyone involved for this wonderful gift,” she said.

Spokesman for informal traders in Port Shepstone, Sibongiseni Dlamini, thanked the department for its support.
