Be viligant in the Port Shepstone CBD

Criminals are lurking! Be alert when you are out and about.

YOU are urged to be vigilant and on the lookout for people acting suspiciously or strangers who offer assistance, especially in the Sheppie CBD.

This follows several cases of robbery being reported to police. Police spokesman, Lieutenant-Colonel Zandra Wiid suggests the following tips to help you keep safe and fight crime.

1. Criminals who plan to attack sometimes lurk around to study their victim’s movements, such a  what times they  arrive at or leave work.

2. Criminals are looking for vulnerable targets such as women who are walking alone or who are carrying handbags or other valuable items.

3. They also focus on people whose attention is being distracted, for example, when they are walking and talking on their mobile phones.

4. Avoid displaying valuable items in the open. Port Shepstone police will be putting preventative measures in place to catch suspects, but  the public is also encouraged to look out for one another.

5. Should you witness someone being robbed, it is advisable to attract the attention of other people who could possibly assist in a citizen’s arrest or who could monitor the fleeing suspect’s movements until the police arrive.

6. It is not advisable to try and apprehend a suspect alone, especially if he is armed. Try to obtain as many details of the suspect’s appearance as possible, which will assist the police in making a quick arrest.
