Beware of these telesales scams

If promised an overseas holiday or a quick and easy way to make money - be careful!

ONE would think everyone is wiser by now, but it seems many people are still falling for scams and giving up their personal banking details to strangers over the phone.

The golden rule is: If it seems too good to be true, it probably is.

It could certainly have been a blue Monday for a Port Shepstone woman who received ‘telesales’ phone calls from two different companies – Platinum Leisure and Stock.com – promising her either an overseas holiday or an investment opportunity on the stock market.

But, thankfully, the woman was too savvy to fall for the scams.

The first caller, she said, was a man with a distinct English accent who said he was calling from a company called Stock.com. He knew her name and tried to persuade her to invest, even if it was a small amount, in stocks. It was an overseas number: +442038084835.

The next call was from Platinum Leisure. This caller, who spoke with an Indian accent said that he had found her number on a national database and she was to be rewarded with an overseas holiday.

He proceeded to ask for her details, including her bank details. The caller ID numbers was: 031 0010147/031 0010206.

When the Herald phoned Platinum Leisure it was told they did not promote or sell overseas holidays. The call then went dead.

The company has received poor customer service ratings on the website ‘Hello Peter’.
