Arrests made in Mfazazana shooting

Police have also recovered an unlicensed rifle which had been stolen during a house robbery.

A MAN has been arrested for the murder of a 28-year-old woman at Mfazazana, near Hibberdene on December 4.

At about midnight, a security guard was sitting in a vehicle with Ntombifuthi Ntokoza Luthuli.

A group of people approached the vehicle and started firing shots. The security guard managed to escape and later returned to find his friend with a gun shot wounds and was already dead.

Last Friday, Sergeant Eugene Blankenberg from Hibberdene SAPS received information and together with Constable Dugmore Mavundla and Cst Kavish Naidoo, and officers of a security company in Hibberdene, went to a house at Mfazazana and arrested a 17-year-old teenager was found in possession of a 306 rifle which had been stolen during a house robbery in Turton in November.

“It is suspected that the same rifle was used in the murder of Ms Luthuli,” said police spokesman, Lieutenant-|Colonel Zandra Wiid. She said the teenager was charged with possession of an unlicensed firearm and appeared in the Hibberdene court yesterday (Monday). He is due to appear again today (Tuesday).

“Investigations will also reveal whether he will be charged for the actual house breaking and the murder,” said Lt-Col Wiid.

On Sunday Lt-Col Bongani Memela, station commander of Hibberdene SAPS, together with Sgt Blankenberg, Cst Mavundla and Cst Naidoo went to Umzinto and arrested a 30-year-old man in connection with the murder of Ms Luthuli. The man is due to appear in court soon.

A third suspect was arrested in Scottburgh. “Investigations will reveal whether he will also be linked to the murder and house breaking cases,” said Lt-Col Wiid.
