Using ATMs can be risky

A pensioner lost R3 000 after using an ATM in Manaba.

MARGATE SAPS is investigating a fraud case after a 75-year-old man was robbed of his cash at an ATM at Manaba last Saturday.

According to police spokesman, Captain Gerald Mfeka the man went to the ATM at about 8.15am. “He punched in his pin code and was then pushed aside by a man. The man then interfered with the ATM and left,” said Captain Mfeka.

The card-owner looked for his card but could not retrieve it from the machine. He later received an SMS notifying him that a sum of R3 000 from withdrawn from his account.

In a report received via Facebook, a local employer reported that two of his staff had also lost money using ATMs – from two different banks – at a shopping mall.
“Both women say that they had entered their pin codes twice. Both machines refused to accept the codes entered, and retained their cards. As they were leaving, they received sms notifications to the effect that all their funds had been withdrawn,” he said.

No arrests have yet been made and Margate police are investigating. Captain Mfeka warned ATM users to always be aware of tjheir surroundings when drawing money.

“Also, don’t let anyone see your pin,” he said. “Many fraudsters pose as bank staff and ask if you need assistance. Don’t let anyone help you unless you know for sure that they are bank personnel,” he added.

Other precautionary measures one should follow are:

*Check the machine for attachments that look suspicious.

*Cancel your card immediately if you suspect it has been cloned.

*Report suspicious people and vehicles immediately to your nearest police station.
