Former policeman arrested on weapons charges

The man and his alleged accomplice were found in possession of unlicensed firearms, ammunition and police uniforms.

A FORMER police captain and another man were arrested on Tuesday this week and will be charged with the possession of unlicensed firearms and ammunition.

The arrests, in the Meyi area, Ibisi near UMzimkhulu, were made by the Port Shepstone Public Order Police, Ugu South Task Team and uMzimkhulu Crime Intelligence and were the result of  a special intelligence operation.

The men were found in possession of five unlicensed firearms, 67 assorted live rounds of ammunition, a magazines, two holsters and police uniforms.

Two 9mm pistols, two special revolvers and a shotgun were recovered.

“One of the suspects is a former police captain who was attached to the stock theft unit,” said police spokesman, Major Thulani Zwane. He said the men are expected to appear in the Umzimkhulu Magistrates Court.

Provincial Commissioner of KwaZulu-Natal, Lieutenant General Mmamonnye Ngobeni welcomed the arrest of the suspects and the recovery of firearms.  “We will not allow our communities to be terrorized by criminals and it is very important that the public stand up and report those involved in criminal activities,” she said.
